为什么孔子Confucius和孟子Mencius的英文名都是以-us结尾，而孙子，老子，墨子等人的却以Tzu结尾？
又为什么Chiang Kai-sheh是蒋介石的英文名，而不是翻译成“常凯申”？"Sun Yat-sen"是“孙逸仙（孙中山）”，而不是“双鸭山”？看文章，对答案。
这次四级翻译就考了传统文化知识，如太极拳、压岁钱、中国戏曲。掌握这些词汇对应的英文是很有必要的。

孔子 Confucius [kən`fjuʃəs]
注：孔子的英文名Confuci是根据其“孔夫子”音译的，孔子和孟子的英文名其实都来自拉丁文，其中的-us后缀在拉丁文里是“阳性”的意思，拉丁文中的名词有性别之分：“阳性”、“中性”和“阴性”。因为孔子和孟子都是男性，所以他们的名字要加上这个后缀-us。
孟子 Mencius
注：孟子（Mencius）是战国时期（the Warring States Period，475
— 221 BC）伟大的思想家、教育家。
老子 Lao Tzu
孙子 Sun Tzu
墨子 Mo Tzu
庄子 Chuang Tzu
注：老子、孙子、墨子和庄子等的英文名字则是根据威妥码翻译的，因为那个时候的汉语拼音还没有问世。汉语拼音于1955年-1957年文字改革时被制定的，并于1958年被批准公布。
用威妥码翻译的名字还有很多。再如，孙中山的英文名是Sun Yat-sen，就是 “孙逸仙”三个汉字的粤语发音。中山大学的英文名Sun Yat-sen
University，曾被误翻译成“双鸭山大学”。蒋介石的英文名是Chiang Kai-shek，也曾被误翻译成了“常凯申”，在翻译界闹了不小的笑话。
